BLESSED GOSWIN, ABBOT Encyclopedia of Saints Blessed Goswin ( Goswinus, Gosvinus ) succeeded Abbot Alvisus - who was raised to the episcopate in 1131 - in the leadership of the Abbey of Achin or Anchin ( Aquiscinctum ) in Hainaut (French: le Hainaut ). A contemporary writer describes him - according to the Bollandists * (Maji III, 110) - as "a relentless chastiser of his own body" and adds that Goswin never uttered a word regarding his mortifications, because he did not seek any human praise for it. He died on October 9, 1166 . (IV, 1084).
