  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 7th of January WELCOME! VENERABLE ANNO, ABBOT The venerable Anno, commemorated on January 7 , was Abbot of the monastery of Micy ( Miciacum ) in the Diocese of Orléans, and simultaneously of the monastery of Jumièges ( Gemeticum ), assuming leadership around the year 943. He possessed the spirit of poverty and charity to such a high degree that he habitually refreshed strangers with wine, while he and his brethren - who were devoted to him with deep love and reverence - drank only water. After governing for more than thirty years and restoring to an excellent state the monastery - which had previously been so close to ruin that it had effectively been auctioned off to the highest bidder - he died in the odor of sanctity in the year 973, deeply mourned by his brethren. SAINT BERARIUS, BISHOP OF LE MANS Saint Berarius, commemorated on October 17, Bishop of Le Mans, was a native of Aquitaine; he ascended the episcopal see of Le Mans around the year 652 and held the office until his death (c. 678). BLESSED MARY DE CERVELLIONE, VIRGIN Blessed Mary, commemorated on September 19 and September 25, the daughter of a Spanish nobleman named William de Cervello (Cervellione) and his wife Mary, was born in Barcelona in 1230, after the marriage had long been childless. From infancy, Mary showed an inclination toward piety, manifested in great love for God, prompt obedience to her parents, generosity toward the poor, and strict chastity. As a young woman coming of age, she could have made a respectable marriage twice, but she preferred perpetual virginity to the married state. Her father died in 1260. SAINT GEORGIA, VIRGIN Monastery yard in the snow Saint Georgia (commemorated on February 15 ; also  March 11 and September 25 ) was a pious virgin whose memory - as stated in the  Roman Martyrology * - is celebrated in Auvergne ( apud Arvernos ). According to  Saint Gregory of Tours , she lived in seclusion and "consecrated every day to the Lord in fasting and prayer." It so happened that, after her passing, when her body was about to be carried to the church of the nearest town, many doves flew along and accompanied the corpse; during the funeral, however, they remained on the church roof and then flew up to heaven. MAROVEUS, BISHOP OF POITIERS Although Maroveus - the nineteenth Bishop of Poitiers in the line of succession - is nowhere recorded as a saint, we believe he deserves a place here due to the special praise  Saint Gregory of Tours  bestows upon him. He lived towards the end of the seventh century. When King Guntram was ravaging the city and the countryside, Maroveus did not even spare precious church vessels in order to ransom himself and the people from the king. SAINT LEOGONTIUS, BISHOP OF CLERMONT Saint Leogontius (June 5), also spelled Leoguntius (French: St-Legonce ), was Bishop of Clermont in Auvergne and the predecessor of Saint Illidius . Some hagiographers state that a church dedicated to him stood by the city's western wall and that he was buried there. He died around the year 366. Friardus and Secundellus, Confessors [ August 1 )].  Saint Friardus - called Friarius by  Butler * - was distinguished from childhood by his fear of God; he spent most of his time in vigil and prayer, yet never failed to earn his livelihood through manual labour. After falling from a tall tree and remaining uninjured, he resolved to serve God ceaselessly in solitude. Together with Abbot Sabaudus and the deacon Secundellus , he settled on the island of Vindunita, in the territory of Nantes, living there in a simple cell. When the wind once tore a branch from a tree he had planted, Friardus fashioned a staff from it; long afterwards, he planted it in the ground and watered it diligently, and it grew into a large tree.
