Saints celebrated on the 30th of July
Prayer to the Angels and the Saints
Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.
In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.
Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.
Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.
BL. MANES DE GUZMAN
Blessed Manes de Guzman, brother of St Dominic, was born in Caleruega (currently part of the province of Burgos) around 1170. He received the first teachings from his parents and his uncle, Archpriest Gonzalo de Aza in Gumiel de Izan. Afterwards, he entered a Cistercian monastery in the Caleruega region.
HE WAS ENTRUSTED WITH THE CARE OF THE DOMINICAN NUNS OF THE MADRID CONVENT
He was sent to Paris along with other Spanish friars and there he collaborated in the foundation of the Saint-Jacques convent (Santiago). His brother Dominic arranged for him, accompanied by Fray Miguel de Fabra, to make a trip to Spain in order to consolidate the new houses of the Order in his country of origin. In 1219, he was entrusted by his brother Dominic with the care of the Dominican nuns of the Madrid convent.
HE PROPOSED THE CONSTRUCTION OF A CHURCH
After the death and subsequent canonisation of his brother Dominic, Bl. Manes went to Caleruega to propose the construction of a church in the place where the new saint had been born, a place that would later become a monastery for contemplatives, still existing.
HAVING A REPUTATION FOR HOLINESS, HE WAS BURIED WITH ALL KINDS OF HONOURS
In 1234 he died in the monastery of San Pedro de Gumiel de Izan and was buried there, where some members of his family were already lying, including his mother, Juana de Aza. Having a reputation for holiness, he was buried with all kinds of honours. Later, his relics were moved to the main altar, there they were exposed to public veneration, along with many other saints.
Pope Gregory XVI declared him blessed.
