ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER
Saints celebrated on the 17th of September
Prayer to the Angels and the Saints
Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.
In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.
Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.
Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.
ST ARIADNE, MARTYR
Saint Ariadne was the maid of a certain Tertillus in the city of Prymnesla in Phrygia.
SHE WAS CRUELLY BEATEN AND THROWN INTO PRISON
Because she did not want to go to the idol temple on the feast of the birth of her master's son, she was cruelly beaten and thrown into prison, where she was left without food or drink.
Afterwards she was brought before the prefect of the city, who had her hung up and ordered for deep cuts to be made on both sides of her torso.
SHE FOUND AN OPPORTUNITY TO ESCAPE
However, when she found an opportunity to escape, she fled to a mountain and asked God to free her from her persecutors. Immediately the mountain opened and received her while the pursuers were killed by angels.
SHE IS DEPICTED ENTERING A ROCK THAT OPENS UP
In the Roman Martyrology, her name is found on September 17.
St Ariadne is depicted entering a rock that opens up. According to Migne, she suffered in A.D. 130 in the reign of Emperor Hadrian.
