SAINT EUMENIUS, ARCHBISHOP OF ALEXANDRIA
Saint Eumenius ruled the Church of Alexandria from A.D. 130-143 as the seventh bishop (counting all prelates including its founder, the holy Evangelist Mark). Since this church was of apostolic origin and Alexandria was the capital of Egypt, it took precedence over all other Egyptian churches at an early stage, and its bishop was named "archbishop" by way of distinction. The patriarchal title, on the other hand, was unknown in the first centuries. (III. 832)
