SAINT EUSEBIA, ABBESS AND MARTYR, AND 39 COMPANIONS, MARTYRS
Saint Eusebia was abbess at the monastery of Saint Cyr (S. Cyrici) near Marseille. She lived in the 8th century.
One day, when the infidels assailed the nunnery, the abbess encouraged her spiritual daughters to fear not so much for their lives as to preserve their holy purity. Thereupon all 39 of them mutilated their noses to deter the infidels from raping them. They preserved their holy virginity, but were inhumanly killed. This massacre took place around the year 732.
Since 1733 these saints have had their own Office in the Breviary of Marseilles. Their festival is celebrated there on the second Sunday in October. Lechner* lists this Saint Eusebia on September 30. (Oct. IV. 292)
