Saints celebrated on the 28th of June
SAINT PAPPIUS, MARTYR OF SICILY
We are not quite sure when and how Saint Pappius (Pappianus) was martyred. According to legend,
he suffered at the time of the emperors Diocletian and Maximian.
Because he refused to sacrifice to the gods, he was tied to four stakes, flogged, and thrown into hot oil, where he escaped unharmed. Pappius was then hanged by his feet, weighed down with a heavy stone, until three days later the rope broke and he fell to the ground unharmed. They then wanted to throw stones at him and covered him completely with them; but an angel preserved him. Finally he was beheaded.
Other sources state that he was born at Segesta and martyred at Brucato under the governor Dacian. The people of Melazzo built a church outside the town in his honour. A translation of his relics then took place, the memory of which is celebrated on June 12 (V. 359).
