WIBOLD, ABBOT OF STABLO
Wibold (Wiboldus) (July 19), the 42nd abbot of Stablo in Belgium, consecrated himself to the Lord in the monastery of Vasor, became abbot of Stablo and Malmedy in 1130; he was held in high esteem by both secular and spiritual notables.
Wibold accompanied Emperor Lothar to Italy in 1137; he then held the position of abbot in Monte Cassino for some time. Because he was very humble, Wibold refused the offices and honours that were intended for him, e.g. the archdioceses of Bremen and Cologne. He died in 1158 at Butellia in Paphlagonia, where he had gone as ambassador for Frederick I. His remains were buried in Stablo. The
Bollandists* list this holy abbot among their praetermissi. (Lech.)
