S. Reinoldus (Reynoldus), M. (January 7).
This holy monk and martyr, also known as Rainaldus, was, according to some legendary accounts, the youngest of the four sons of Haymon¹. He renounced military life and entered Saint Pantaleon's Monastery in Cologne. His abbot appointed him overseer of the stonemasons. It seems he administered this position with considerable severity, for, around the year 960, the workers conspired against him, beat him to death, and threw his body into the river Rhine. His holy body, weighed down with stones, resurfaced and was presented to the citizens of Dortmund. He is the patron saint of stonemasons and of the city of Dortmund. Here stands a beautiful church dedicated to him, the city's most interesting architectural monument, containing relics brought here in 1059 by Archbishop Anno II. Until the Reformation, the citizens celebrated the feast of his elevation every year on January 7. When Emperor Charles IV and his wife Elisabeth of Austria visited the city in 1377 and 1378, they also venerated the relics of Saint Reinold and, at their request, received smaller portions of them as gifts. The church at Roxel near Münster is also dedicated to Saint Reinold. Images show him in a monk's habit with a hammer in his hand; sometimes he also appears in armour, an allusion to his earlier life as a knight.
