WELCOME!

SAINT STAPINUS, BISHOP OF CARCASSONNE

According to some accounts, Stapinus was Bishop of Carcassonne. There, as well as in some parts of Belgium and Germany, he is venerated as the patron saint of gout sufferers.

His history is obscure. He is said to have been born in Dourgne, in the diocese of Lavaur, between the years 683 and 788, and later to have led a life of asceticism as a hermit in his homeland, until the citizens of Carcassonne summoned him and elected him their bishop. In Carcassonne and other places, notably also in Milan, where an altar in the church of Santa Maria Secreta is dedicated to his name, August 6 is celebrated as his feast day. In Dourgne (Tarn department), a quarter of an hour before the town, there is a pilgrimage church dedicated to him, which is heavily visited on August 6 and contains numerous votive tablets. He is also the second patron saint of the church in Ventenac (Aude department). Formerly, in the 17th century, there was a confraternity dedicated to him in Lyon. Church art depicts Stapinus as a bishop, his feet bandaged like those of a gout sufferer.

The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me; it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world. THE AUGUST 13 EVENTS On August 13, the children were in jail at Ourem. The civil administrator threatened to boil them in oil if they did not tell the Lady’s secret. Though badly frightened, they could not think of disobeying our Lady. In disgust, the administrator finally freed them. A large number of people, not knowing that the children had been kidnapped, went to the Cova for the scheduled appearance of the Lady. At noon, there was a loud clap of thunder.
