ARNO, ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG
Arno was the first Archbishop of Salzburg and a contemporary of the Bavarian Duke Thassilo II, who sent him to negotiate with Charlemagne. Arno's diplomatic visit was unsuccessful.
This emperor, however, became very fond of Arno and succeeded in having him, who preached Christianity to the Huns and Slavs after the example of his predecessor Virgil, receive the archbishop's pallium.
Pope Leo III honoured him so much that he usually addressed him the "saint" in his letters. Arno died in A.D. 821 after administering his bishopric for 36 years. He left us a catalogue in which he recorded all the benefits that the Bavarian dukes had bestowed on the bishops of Salzburg (Congestum Arnonis). (Rad.)
