SAINT GREGORY, BISHOP OF LANGRES

Saint Gregory, Bishop of Langres, commemorated on January 4 and May 13, became immensely popular as a senator of Autun through his strict justice. His wife Armentaria bore him two sons, Saint Tetricus, later also Bishop of Langres, and Gregory, the grandfather of Saint Gregory of Tours. After serving as a senator for 40 years, he renounced this office to dedicate himself physically to God alone, whom he carried in his heart. When his wife died, he was unexpectedly ordained a priest, and soon afterward, by the joint election of the clergy and people, was elevated to Bishop of Langres. As such, he worked through word and example, as well as through the apostolic wisdom with which he was endowed, at the Synods of Epaone (in 517) and Auvergne (in 535). His humility is especially praised. In order for no one to know he was drinking water, he had a coloured glass brought to him at table. He also possessed miraculous powers; those he touched with his staff were healed. He died in 541, the 13th year of his episcopate, and at his request was buried in Dijon, near the tomb of the holy martyr Saint Benignus, whose crypt he had renovated. Long after his death, his face was still blooming, and his clothing was found intact. His translation is celebrated on May 13. In depictions, the saint is shown entering the church on a dark night, with angels opening the door for him. (I. 167).
