*In this month, we celebrate the Advent of Christ the Lord - that is, the coming of the divine Saviour. This celebration serves as a festive prelude to holy Christmas Day, the beginning and source of our salvation; for this reason, the Church of God begins its liturgical year with Advent. Solemn wedding celebrations are prohibited from the eve of the First Sunday of Advent until the Feast of the Three Kings (Epiphany). The Ember Days also fall in this month; the prescribed fast days are the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday following the Feast of Saint Lucy. One is also obliged to fast on Christmas Eve. Following Christmas Day, the only feast currently observed in a special way is that of the holy Arch-martyr Stephen; the Feast of Saint John and the Feast of the Holy Innocents are no longer celebrated as grand as they were in times past.
Whoever wishes to read in more detail about the ecclesiastical or liturgical year - about all holy seasons and feast days, and the significance of their observance - and to be thoroughly instructed therein, should read the fourth volume of "The Complete Catholic Doctrine in Its Interconnected Context".
