SAINT LEOGONTIUS, BISHOP OF CLERMONT Saint Leogontius (June 5), also spelled Leoguntius (French: St-Legonce ), was Bishop of Clermont in Auvergne and the predecessor of Saint Illidius . Some hagiographers state that a church dedicated to him stood by the city's western wall and that he was buried there. He died around the year 366. In his "Lives of the Saints of Auvergne" , Jakob Branche * claims that Leogontius is venerated as a saint due to the undeniable miracles he performed; he further asserts that a church was built in his honour but that his remains were transferred to the church of the holy martyr Cassius . This latter claim, however, is entirely arbitrary, as Branche * - without any basis - substitutes Leogontius for Leogontia (an altar dedicated to whom is indeed found in the church of Cassius ).
