ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST
Saints celebrated on the 7th of August
Prayer to the Angels and the Saints
Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.
In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.
Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.
Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.
BL. EDMUND BOJANOWSKI, FOUNDER
Blessed Edmund Bojanowski was born in Poland on November 14, 1814 of noble parentage. Both his parents were devout Catholics which proved a critical influence on his deep religious convictions formed from childhood.
HE BECAME SERIOUSLY ILL
In 1819 he became seriously ill. His parents praying day and night for his recovery, the child vowed to dedicate his life to the Blessed Mother. Bl. Edmund continued to suffer ill health throughout his lifetime.
HE WAS TOO FRAIL TO JOIN THE PRIESTHOOD
In 1835 he developed tuberculosis during the course of his education. He later continued his studies at the Breslau college, and, after that, at the college in Berlin. But Bl. Edmund was far too frail at this time to join the priesthood; this was a vocation that he would attempt again later in life.
HE TRANSLATED WORKS AND WROTE POETRY
Bl. Edmund translated works from Serbian to Polish during this time, and composed poetry. He was known to spend hours in Eucharistic adoration and often meditated on Sacred Scripture. He made his Confession once a week and made annual retreats in order to undergo the Spiritual Exercises.
HE BECAME INVOLVED IN CREATING ORPHANAGES
Bl. Edmund also became involved in providing books for schools as well as establishing new libraries and creating orphanages for poor children. During the cholera epidemic during the period 1848-49 he tended to the sick while helping to medicate and comfort them. Due to the rampant sickness he saw around him he helped organise a new hospital, and he helped to fund hospices and orphanages.
HE FOUNDED THE CONGREGATION OF THE SISTERS SERVANTS OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE VIRGIN MOTHER OF GOD
He deemed service to the poor as an important task and due to this was able to found a religious order of nuns known as called the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mother of God. This later led to the creation of separate religious orders in Posen as well as other cities such as Breslau. In 1867 he authorised the founding of the Congregation of the Poor Servants of the Mother of God which Mother Magdalen of the Sacred Heart led in England.
HIS HEALTH CONTINUED TO DETERIORATE
Bl. Edmund later decided to study for the priesthood once more in 1869 in Gniezno; but his health continued to deteriorate to the point where he later died August 7, 1871 in Górka Duchowna without becoming ordained as a priest as he had wished for.
