WELCOME!

BLESSED JOSE MARIA GRAND CICERA, PRIEST AND MARTYR

Jose Maria was born on  April 27, 1945, Spain, and entered the Novitiate of the Missionary Fathers of the Sacred Heart, in Canet de Mar, Barcelona, in 1965. He made his religious profession on September 8, 1966 and was ordained a priest on June 9, 1972. Moving to Guatemala in 1975 to work as a missionary in the diocese of Quiche, he ministered in the parishes of Santa Cruz;  Zacualpa and San Gaspar Chajul. On June 4, 1980 Jose Maria was shot dead along with his lay sacristan Domingo del Barrio Batz, whilst returning to Chajul on horseback after visiting remote villages of the parish. He is one of the holy Martyrs of Quiche.

Between 1960 to 1996, Guatemala struggled through a conflict between its military regime and various leftist groups, during which time over 200.000 people were killed. During the 1980s in particular the Church began to undergo systematic persecution for its role in the defence of the dignity and rights of the poor.

ST JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August WELCOME! SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS   (Patron Saint of Altar Servers.) The eldest boy of a poor cordwainer, in a small Belgian town, John was ever a dutiful, prayerful, and studious child. Our Lord called him when but young to leave his father and his father’s house, to serve Him in the Society of Jesus.  And because he was so good a son, it cost his father much to give him up to God; but he was too good a Christian to refuse outright.  HE WAS SENT TO ROME John had hardly taken his religious vows when he was sent to the centre of Christendom, the holy city of Rome. His modesty, his purity, shone out as great virtue always does; and the young laymen who attended the lectures would come to gaze upon his beautiful and holy face, and go away the better for the sight. GREAT VIRTUE Three short years, and his last sickness found him sighing for heaven, and three days before the great feast of Mary’s Assumption in 1

SAINT UNCUMBER - 20 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 20th of July WELCOME! SAINT UNCUMBER Saint  Wilgefortis (Commeria, Kümmernis,[Uncumber]) was the daughter of a pagan king of Provence or Sicily. Her story is found in a church dedicated to her in Neufahrn in Eching, South Germany. She is pictured on the centre peace of the high altar wearing a crown and sporting a beard. The inscription reads: "St Wilgefortis, ora pro nobis." Her legend is related on a board on one of the walls: A pious man instructed her, whereupon she became a Christian. Following her conversion, she vowed to remain a virgin, like the mother of the Lord. When soon afterwards her father wanted her to be the wife of the pagan king Amasius of Portugal, she steadfastly declared that she was a Christian and would never marry a worldly man.  HER PRAYER Enraged by this, her father had her tortured with red-hot tongs and locked her up until she would do his will, and also sacrifice to idols once again.
