WELCOME!

BLESSED HABERILLA, ABBESS

The maiden Haberilla lived as a hermit in a cell near the eastern end of Lake Constance, in Mehrerau, close to Bregenz, Austria, during the 7th century.

ASSIDUOUS PRAYER BY DAY AND BY NIGHT

She is described as continuously fixing her gaze upon Christ crucified, devoting herself to assiduous prayer by day and by night.

Other women came to follow her example. This community grew into a Benedictine convent, with Haberilla as abbess. She received her habit from the priest, monk, and hermit Saint Gall (+c.645).

NUMEROUS MIRACLES

The tomb of Haberilla was to become the site of numerous miracles. Invalids suffering from fevers, vertigo, ophthalmia (an eye ailment), ulcers, wounds, paralysis and colic (an abdominal ailment) obtained miraculous cures through her intercession.

Haberilla was found to be a particularly powerful heavenly advocate on behalf of babies and children. Parents would bring their ill babies to her tomb especially on Fridays, invoking her and passing their infants beneath her tombstone three times in honour of the Holy Trinity. Many babies were healed in this way.

“Let us praise the God whose mystery fills the universe with wonder: We praise and exalt you above all for ever!”
