ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER
Saints celebrated on the 20th of November
Prayer to the Angels and the Saints
Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.
In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.
Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.
Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.
BL. MARIA FORTUNATA VITI, VIRGIN
Anna Felicia Viti was born in Veroli, a comune in Italy's Province of Frosinone, on February 10, 1827. Her father was Luigi Viti, a landowner who was a gambling addict and a heavy drinker, and her mother Anna, née Bono, died when Maria was fourteen years old.
The third eldest of nine children, Maria was saddled with the responsibility of raising the other children upon the death of her mother. In order to support her family, she worked as a housekeeper.
SHE SUPPORTED HER FATHER AND SIBLINGS
Her father's alcoholism grew worse, and so Maria's employment constituted the majority of the family's income. For a while, she was wooed by a young man from Alatri, but she decided to enter religious life instead.
Maria joined the Benedictines at the Monastery of San Maria de' Franconi in Veroli on March 21, 1851, at the age of 24.
SHE SPENT MORE THAN SEVENTY YEARS IN THE ORDER
After her religious profession, she took the name Maria Fortunata. Though she spent more than seventy years in the Order, she never progressed beyond the office of housekeeper: she served the monastery by spinning, sewing, washing, and mending clothing. Sr Maria remained illiterate her entire life, but she had great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.
SHE HAD A GREAT DEVOTION TO THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
Sr Maria died on November 20, 1922 in Veroli, at the age of 95, of natural causes.
She was beatified on October 8, 1967 by Pope Paul VI. Her feast is November 20.
Patronage: Against temptation; impoverishment; loss of parents; mental illness.
