OBSCURE SAINTS

SS. DIONAS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS - 14 MARCH

SS. Dionas and Companions are commemorated on March 14. Saints Dionas, Alexander, Peter, Mammerus, Naboxus, Fronton (Prompton), Comes (Comis) and Mary attained the crown of martyrdom in Africa.

COMNANUS, ABBOT - 14 MARCH

Comnanus, an abbot or bishop of the Isle of Hy, who is said to have been the tutor of King Ferquardus.

PINUPHIUS, PRIEST AND ABBOT - 14 MARCH

Pinuphius is commemorated on March 14 or November 27. He was a priest and abbot in Egypt; he is venerated by the Greeks on November 27. He lived for a time in the monastery of Tabenna in order to practice greater austerity and to be able to devote himself to the humiliating work which he loved. However, he was accidentally recognised by a brother and brought back to his own monastery. He is mentioned in an English martyrology on March 14.

ST SAGAR, BISHOP - 14 MARCH

Saint Sagar (Sagaris), commemorated on October 6 or March 14, was Bishop of Laodicea in Phrygia, a disciple (but not an immediate one) of the holy Apostle Paul. He died as a martyr around A.D. 170 or 175 under the Proconsul Servilius and the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. His martyrdom is confirmed by Eusebius and other historians. the Bollandists mention him also on March 14. His name is inserted in the Roman Martyrology. 

ST INFANS, MONK - 14 MARCH

Saint Infans is commemorated on February 21or March 14. He was a Basilian monk in Palermo, who is mentioned in the Roman Martyrology Ordinis S. Basilii. In the 12th century, his incorrupt body was transferred to Pisa.

CUINNECHUS - 14 MARCH

Cuinnechus, (commemorated on March 14) occurs in Irish calendars.

RAPHAEL - RELIGIOUS

Raphael (commemorated on March 14), was a devout Carmelite of the province of Rennes in France.

ST BERTHA OF AVENAY, ABBESS AND MARTYR - 1 MAY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 1st of May WELCOME! ST BERTHA OF AVENAY, ABBESS AND MARTYR The name Bertha (Berta) is derived from the Old German  bercht, brecht, bert etc., meaning shiny, splendid.  Saint Bertha, a martyr and abbess of Avenay (Aveniacum) in the diocese of Rheims, was descended from a noble family. Married to  St Gumbert (April 29), she obtained her husband's consent to join the monastic life. She then built the aforementioned monastery of Avenay. Following an apparition of the Blessed Virgin, she received many nuns there. Once, when Bertha was silently praying for water for her monastery, St Peter appeared to her and showed her a place where there was a spring, which then began to flow into the monastery in a running stream (ex quo fonte mox rivus egressus secutus est eam ad coenobium remeantem).  Finally, towards the end of the 7th century, she was killed by her stepsons - for what reason is not specified, perhaps in ...
