BLESSED MARIA, WIFE OF ST ISIDORE
For a long time Blessed Maria (Mary Toribia), wife of St Isidore, was almost forgotten. In 1596 however, when her relics were rediscovered, her veneration was revived.
It is not known with certainty whether her name was Maria. Several places, including Madrid, claim that she was born there. Torrejon (Turris-lagunae) on the Xarama is most likely the place of her birth, though, because she seems to have lived here with her husband. Legend has it that one day she crossed this river with dry feet, in order to rid her husband of any suspicion of marital infidelity.
After the death of Isidore, she retired to Caraquiz, where she died between 1140 and 1175. Castellanus* notes the transfer of her relics to the Franciscan church on September 8, 1615. In 1697, Innocent XII approved her veneration.
Maria is also commemorated on September 8.
