GILBERT OF FONTENELLE, ABBOT

According to Mabillon* Gilbert became abbot of Fontenelle in 1062 (according to Bucelin* 1063). He was highly educated, led a life rich in merit, active in monastic discipline, promoted the liturgical chant etc. According to an epitaph communicated by the same source, Gilbert was born in Mainz [Germany] and was of noble origin. His death took place on September 4, 1089.

According to Butler*, where Gilbert is called "Saint Gilbert" he was the 30th abbot of Fontenelle, descended from a respected family in Germany, and left his fatherland with the monk Maurilius von Fecamp, who later became Archbishop of Rouen.

Bucelin* lists Gilbert on February 8, and states that he was initially a hermit, then became a monk at Fontenelle, and remained in constant contact with the holy Archbishop Maurilius of Rouen.

With Lechner* he appears under the name Gerbert and is called "godly." Migne* inserts Gilbert on November 4.
