Saints celebrated on the 16th of May
WELCOME!
SAINT FIDOLUS, ABBOT
Saint Fidolus, St-Falc in French, came from one of the best houses of Clermont in Auvergne. Under the son of the Frankish king Clovis I. he was taken to Champagne as a prisoner, where St Aventine, who lived as a hermit in the neighbourhood of Troyes, ransomed him and took him in. He joined the number of Aventine's disciples.
Fidolus did his rescuer and teacher much credit. His penances, which bordered on the miraculous (e.g., he went almost the whole of Lent without food), led him swiftly along on the way of perfection.
Subsequently, Fidolus was elected prior, then abbot of the monastery. Never did he relax the severity of his life until he died a gentle death, which was probably around the middle of the sixth century (around the year 540 - or, according to Bucelin* in the year 580). The Martyrology of St Jerome* states that his death occurred on May 16, and so does the Roman Martyrology*.
