BRATHGIT, VIRGIN AND ABBESS

Butler* (Vol. VII. p. 460), in the life of Saint Boniface, Archbishop of Mainz, mentions a Saint Brathgit¹, whom this holy prelate called from England and put in charge of one of the monasteries he founded. According to Seiters* (p. 198) her name is Berathgit and her mother Chunihild. Most likely she is identical with Saint Bergita (Bertigita), abbess of Thuringia.

¹ "To assist him in planting the spirit of meekness and Christian piety in a fierce and uncivilized nation, Saint Boniface invited over from England many holy men and religious women. Among these were Saint Wigbert, Saint Burchard, bishop of Würzburg, Saint Willibald, bishop of Aichstätt, and Saint Lullus: and among the holy virgins, were Saint Lioba, our saint’s cousin, Saint Thecla, Saint Walburge, Bertigita, and Contruda, to whom he committed the direction of several nunneries which he erected in Thuringia, Bavaria, and other places. In 746 he laid the foundation of the great abbey of Fulda or Fulden, which continued long the most renowned seminary of piety and learning in all that part of the world."
