⬅️ Saintly Archbishops of Canterbury
Johannes Pechamus was Archbishop of Canterbury; he is also called Peccanus and Peckham. According to Zedler* (27, 24), he was born poor at Chichester in England, studied at Oxford, then became a Franciscan and a disciple of Saint Bonaventure, with whom he made such progress that he was considered the oracle of divine learning.
He then taught at Oxford and Paris, was made canon in Lyon and became an auditor in Rome. Finally, in 1278, he was consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury by Pope Nicholas III. He died on April 24 (according to others on January 8) 1292 and left behind many writings of theological content and works dealing with mathematics and physics. Hub. Men.* lists him, and the Bollandists* feature his entry on April 24 among the Praetermissi (III. 260).
