VENERABLE ERENFRID, COUNT PALATINE

A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's
Saints' books,
"Stammenbuch..." (1693)

Venerable Erenfrid (Ehrenfrid, Ezzo, Ezo, Elo), Mathilde and Blessed Richeza (Erenfridus, Mathildis et Richeza) are the most famous members of this nuclear family.

The name Erenfrid is derived from the old German Erinfrid, meaning defender of the honour.

Venerable Erenfrid was a Count Palatine who lived a godly life with his wife Mathilde, who was a daughter of Emperor Otto II. The couple founded the Braunweiler Monastery near Cologne and, after Mathilde's death in A.D. 1025, Erenfrid lived there like a monk and finally, as an 80-year old man, went to his eternal rest.

Erenfrid and Mathilde had ten children, among them a daughter Uichem (Richeza), who was married to the king of Poland, but left him because of adultery.

After her brother Count Palatine Otto died, she went into a monastery in holy sorrow. She too had a monastery built (by Abbot Elio of Braunweiler), which Pope Leo IX approved. Richeza finally died in 1063 (near Saalfeld) and her body was taken to Cologne and buried at the church of Saint Mary. (V. 48)

The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me; it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world. THE AUGUST 13 EVENTS On August 13, the children were in jail at Ourem. The civil administrator threatened to boil them in oil if they did not tell the Lady’s secret. Though badly frightened, they could not think of disobeying our Lady. In disgust, the administrator finally freed them. A large number of people, not knowing that the children had been kidnapped, went to the Cova for the scheduled appearance of the Lady. At noon, there was a loud clap of thunder. Then, according to an eyewitness: “Right after the thunder came a flash, and immediately we all noticed a little cloud, very white, beautiful and bright,...
