SAINT ADALBERT, ARCHBISHOP OF MAGDEBURG
Saint Adalbert (Adalbertus), the first archbishop of Magdeburg, was initially a Benedictine monk in Trier. Otto I., at the request of some Russians, sent him to their area to evangelize the general population. But not only did he achieve nothing in Russia - on top of that, his companions were killed and his own life was in grave danger more than once.
As a reward for his efforts, Emperor Otto I. made him abbot of the Weissenburg monastery in the Speyer diocese in A.D. 966, and two years later he was appointed archbishop of Magdeburg; this dignity was confirmed by Pope John XIII.
The cathedral chapter in Magdeburg, in which he introduced strict order, owed him the right to elect an archbishop, as he himself received the pallium, and installed the first bishops of Merseburg, Meissen and Zeitz. He died in 981 and was buried at the Magdeburg Cathedral.
