WELCOME!

SAINT HELLADIUS, BISHOP OF AUXERRE

Entrance of the ancient
Saint Pierre Abbey, Auxerre
Not much is known about Bishop Helladius (Eladius). His episcopal seat was Auxerre (Antissiodorum). Here he directed the ecclesiastical affairs of this ancient diocese for 23 years (from 364 to 387). Saint Amator, who later became his successor, was ordained to the priesthood by him, and he gave the veil to his sister Martha. His veneration is ongoing in France to this day, and he is mentioned in the Roman Martyrology* on the above day. (II. 300.)

Helladius, who died A.D. 387, was a Christian bishop of Auxerre for thirty years. Saint Amator (died A.D. 418) was ordained deacon and tonsured by Helladius, which provides the earliest example of ecclesiastical tonsure mentioned in the religious history of France. He is commemorated on May 8.
