Saints celebrated on the 25th of June
SAINT SOLOMON, KING AND PENITENT
The third king of this name, Solomon (Salomon) died as a martyr in A.D. 874. His father was called Rivallon. Charles the Bald made him king of Brittany in 803, which he was to rule in his name. But Solomon was no better than many princes of his time and in 807 pursued a supposed rival into the church, where he murdered him at the altar.
From now on his luck was gone. He then recognised his injustice, did very serious penance and in atonement also built the Church St Maxentius for the greater glory of God. However, according to God's providence, Solomon had to give his life in order to atone. A conspiracy arose against him, death threats were uttered, against which he tried in vain to protect himself by fleeing.
The place where he died, as we gather from Guerin*, is still called La Martyre, the place of torture, and is in the Dep. Finistere. He was blinded and died the same day. His pious death and the severe penance that preceded it earned him the honour of a saint. Some of his relics are still in the Cathedral of Vannes. He is particularly revered at Piuviers.
Saint Solomon is also commemorated on June 23, February 8, and November 5.
