Saints celebrated on the 13th of July
ERNEST, ABBOT
Ernest (Ernestus, Ernst) was the first abbot of the Neresheim monastery in Swabia, which was founded in A.D. 1095.
He had previously lived at the Zwiefalten monastery, which had also just been founded (in 1089) by the Count of Achalm. From there, Ernest took twelve monks with him to populate the Neresheim institute.
Soon after taking office, he joined a pilgrimage with many crusaders to the tomb of the Redeemer. He also tried to secure some relics from the Holy Land to take back with him to his monastery. The Saracens imprisoned him, and he died in captivity on July 13, 1096. Lechner* calls him "Venerable Ernest." (Lech.)
