Saints celebrated on the 26th of May
SAINT BERENGARIUS OF PAPOUL, RELIGIOUS
The name Berengar [Berenger, Bérenger, Berengarius] is derived from the Old German baeringias: willing to bear arms. Other interpretations (Schwenck) suggest the meaning spear of a bear.
Saint Berengar, monk of the monastery of Papoul (Papulum) in Languedoc, came from a very distinguished family in the area of Toulouse, and entered the aforementioned monastery, diocese of Toulouse, at an early age, where he held several offices, one after the other. His blessed life was matched by an equally blessed death on Ascension Day in 1093. The Lord God glorified his tomb with many miracles.
