WELCOME!

SAINT LIMENIUS AND FELLOW BISHOPS OF VERCELLI

Saint Limenius (November 25), along with Dunshelius, Albinus, Simplicius, Maximian, Lanfranc, Constantius, and Philosophus were, according to the Elenchus*, bishops of Vercelli. Saint Limenius is also mentioned on October 9 by the Bollandists* (among the praetermissi) (IV. 565) , with the remark that Ughellus* calls him "saint", and Ferrarius* says of him that he was a Greek, the successor of Bishop Saint Eusebius, and that he attended the Council of Aquileia in 381 together with Saint Ambrose.

Since the Bollandists* had no evidence of his ecclesiastical veneration at that time, they placed him among the praetermissi without a title at first. But at some point afterwards they seem to have received such proofs, because they did include him in the Elenchus*, where in the preface (page 17) they expressly state that they have included in it only "saints, blesseds, and some venerable ones," whose memory is celebrated in the various martyrologies from October 15th until the end of the year.

Since, moreover, all the bishops mentioned above are stated to have been "saints" in Zedler* (47.278), we did not think it wrong to add the predicate "sanctus" to all these names.

Zedler* lists Saint Limenius as the 2nd bishop of Vercelli, with the addition that he attended the Council of Aquileia (in 381). Saint Dunshelius (Duscellus, Coelius) was, according to him, 4th bishop of Vercelli; he died in 415 at Ravenna. Saint Albinus was his 6th bishop, who died in 435 at Ravenna. Saint Simplicius was the 8th bishop - he died in 470; Saint Maximianus was the 9th bishop (no year of death is indicated). Saint Lanfranc was, according to this source, the 10th bishop (d. 480). The 13th bishop was Constantius, (d. 530), and the 15th bishop was Saint Philosophus, (d. 600).  It is also added here of Saint Constantius that he had two sisters, both of whom he placed in the monastery.

ST JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August WELCOME! SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS   (Patron Saint of Altar Servers.) The eldest boy of a poor cordwainer, in a small Belgian town, John was ever a dutiful, prayerful, and studious child. Our Lord called him when but young to leave his father and his father’s house, to serve Him in the Society of Jesus.  And because he was so good a son, it cost his father much to give him up to God; but he was too good a Christian to refuse outright.  HE WAS SENT TO ROME John had hardly taken his religious vows when he was sent to the centre of Christendom, the holy city of Rome. His modesty, his purity, shone out as great virtue always does; and the young laymen who attended the lectures would come to gaze upon his beautiful and holy face, and go away the better for the sight. GREAT VIRTUE Three short years, and his last sickness found him sighing for heaven, and three days before the great feast of Mar...

ST LAURA OF CORDOBA, WIDOW AND MARTYR - 19 OCTOBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 19th of October WELCOME! SAINT LAURA OF CORDOBA, WIDOW AND MARTYR   Laura, a widow and martyr of  Cordoba  in Spain, is mentioned in the Spanish martyrology of Tamajode Salazar, who refers to Luitprand, where it says the following: St Laura is said to have been of a noble family, and  according to the wishes of her parents she married an equally noble man and gave birth to two daughters.  After the death of her husband and her daughters, she went to the monastery of St Aurea, named St-Maria de Cuteclara, and after her martyrdom led the same for nine years as her successor.  After she had made wonderful progress in all virtues, she was finally summoned to renounce the faith before a Saracen judge. But since she remained steadfast, she was first beaten very cruelly and then thrown into a bath of boiling pitch, where she remained in praise of God for three hours and then flew to heaven on October...
