Saints celebrated on the 17th of June
WELCOME!
SAINT VEROLUS, CONFESSOR
The holy confessor Verolus, French Veroul or Vorles [Verolo], is venerated in Châtillon (Castellio) on the Seine, where his relics were transferred, and in Marcenay (Marcenniacum) in the Diocese of Langres, his birthplace and place of death.
According to local tradition, he came from a distinguished family, very friendly to the royal house of the castle, but chose the priesthood, in which he believed he could best work for the salvation of his soul and that of his fellow human beings. He performed miracles of love and renunciation of the world, and granted every physical and spiritual help to the poor, the sick, and the needy. One day, while King Guntram was attending his Mass, he suddenly fell into a rapture and remained motionless around the altar for more than an hour. When, after the completion of the holy Sacrifice, he was asked what had happened to him, Verolus replied: “It was revealed to me that in the village of Plaines (Platanus), while the inhabitants were away at Mussy (Musciacum), a fire had broken out, in which a child sleeping at home was in danger of being burned; I went and saved the child.” Investigations, which the king immediately ordered on the spot, confirmed his statement. Only this part of his life has survived. The Bollandists* place his death around the year 600. The translation of his mortal remains to Châtillon was solemnly performed by Bishop Isaac of Langres during the Norman Wars on May 26, 868. Other devotions took place more frequently later; the saint's protection and intercession were invoked especially against prolonged drought. The inhabitants last experienced his miraculous power in 1632 during the cholera epidemic. After a solemn procession to Plaines was held in his honour, not a single death occurred, whereas previously the disease had claimed 52 lives in a short time. Church art depicts Verolus as a priest, rescuing a child from the flames.
