SAINT HUNNA OF HUNNAWEYER
Saint Hunna, also called [Huna and] Huva by some, a relative of Duke Adalrich (Atticus) of Alsace, was the pious wife of a wealthy nobleman named Huno (Hunon), who lived in Hunnaweyer, a village in Upper Alsace.
Her son Deodatus became a monk at Eberheimsmünster. According to the Bollandists* he was named after Bishop Deodatus of Nevers, who baptised him. No doubt this holy son had a great influence on the family. Specifically, St Hunna took Christian charity to an astonishing height. Because of her humility, she earned the title "holy washerwoman", since she did laundry for the poor - free of charge. In other ways, too, she performed many good deeds.
According to Migne*, her happy death occurred in 679. In 1520, at the request of Duke Ulrich von Württemberg, Pope Leo Χ placed her among the saints. On April 15 of the same year her relics were solemnly raised. In the Elenchus*, "Huna, a matron from Alsace", is mentioned on November 30. (But.)
St Hunna is also commemorated on April 15.
