JOHN BAPTIST OF POLAND, RELIGIOUS
John Baptist of Poland (John Baptista a Polonia) was a Capuchin, who was commonly called "the Pole." As the son of a noble chancellor, he had been chosen to be the royal representative to escort the princes of Poland on a trip to Italy.
In Milan he had the joy of seeing Saint Charles Borromeo, of whom he had already heard many edifying things, and to receive holy communion from this saint's own hands.
Deeply touched, John Baptist thereupon decided to remain in Milan. He joined the Capuchin Order on August 10, 1585. The following year he was transferred to the recently founded Schwyz monastery. He devoted himself with great zeal to prayer and penance. Moreover, John Baptist was distinguished by various divine graces, including the gift of prophecy. Miracles before and after his death attested to the holiness of this servant of God, who died in Constance on January 7, 1632. (Burg. II. 475.)
