SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO, BISHOP
Born in Italy in 1538, Charles Borromeo became a prominent defender of the faith at the time of the Counter-Reformation. He was ordained young, studied canon and civil law, was made a cardinal and Archbishop of Milan by his uncle, Pope Pius IV in 1559. He played a leading part in the last sessions of the Council of Trent, and drafted the Catechism. He was a reforming archbishop, concerned with administration and with the moral life of the clergy. He established seminaries, organisations for the religious education of children, and in the plague of 1576 was active in the care of the sick. He died in 1584.
PRAYER:
Father,
keep your people in the spirit
which filled Charles Borromeo.
Let your Church be continually renewed
and show the image of Christ to the world
by being conformed to his likeness,
who lives and reigns, with you and the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
