SAINT EYSTEINN ERLENDSSON, ARCHBISHOP OF NIDAROS

Eysteinn [Eystein](Augustinus Nidrosiensis), of noble family, was born in the first half of the 12th century near Trondheim. Erlend Himalde, his father, was the grandson of Tørberg Arnesson, an advisor to several Norwegian kings.

Eysteinn felt called to the priesthood, was educated at Saint-Victor, in Paris and, when Archbishop Jon Birgersson died on February 24, 1157, Eysteinn was appointed his successor; he then went to see Pope Alexander III in Rome. He received the pallium from him and returned to Norway in 1161. In his new role, Eysteinn established several communities of Augustinian canons regular and consecrated the famous Saint Thorlak. In 1163, he crowned Magnus Erlingsson King of Norway. This was the first time such a ceremony had taken place in Norway.

Saint Eysteinn wrote a Life of Saint Olave, "Passio Et Miracula Beati Olaui". This holy bishop went to his eternal reward on January 26, 1188.

The Proprium of Passau relates his life story as follows: Saint Valentine came from the seashore and arrived at Batava, today's Passau. Here he wanted to proclaim the gospel to the inhabitants, who were ignorant of the true worship of God, and therefore went to Rome to obtain the necessary authority from the Pope for this undertaking. Upon his return, he invested much time and effort to gain those lost souls for Christ, as the Pope expected him to. Valentine himself thirsted for their salvation, incessantly preaching the Divine word to them. After some considerable time, however, Valentine realised that all the seed he had sown fell on rocky ground.
