HILDEBALD, ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE Hildebald, Archbishop of Cologne The name Hildebald is derived from the Old German child , meaning battle , and bald , which translates as mighty . Hildebald, Archbishop ( September 3 ; alternatively October 2 ). His name is also spelled Hildeboldus, Hyldebaldus, Hildibaldus, Hildivaldus, Hildialdus, Hildepold, Hiltibald, Hiddibald , and Addebald. He was the first Archbishop of Cologne; prior to his tenure, the see had been occupied merely by suffragans of Trier and subsequently of Mainz. Castellanus* and Gelenius* include him among the saints. He lived during the reigns of Emperors Charlemagne and Louis the Pious. He held the See of Cologne from the year 784 to 819.
