SAINT AVERTANUS AND SAINT ROMAEUS, CARMELITES
![]() |
Saint Avertanus and Romaeus (February 25).
Saint Avertanus, a lay brother of the Carmelite Order, was born in Limoges, France, and entered the order at the prompting of an angel. He possessed a high degree of chastity and prayed so much on his knees that he developed calluses. On his pilgrimage to Rome, where he intended to venerate the holy relics, he was struck by a fever and died in a suburb of Lucca, Italy, after having had an apparition of Christ. At his death, the city's bells are said to have rung of their own accord.
His companion on this journey was the blessed
Romaeus. Inconsolable at the death of Saint Avertanus and himself utterly exhausted from the journey, he too fell ill and died on the eighth day after the death of his holy companion, surrounded by Jesus Christ and a countless host of saints, among whom was Saint Avertanus, who had appeared with the Lord.
They lived in the 14th century and are venerated in Lucca. The name of Saint Avertanus features in the Martyrology* for the Carmelites on February 25. Romaeus is listed in the same Martyrology* for the Carmelites on March 4.

PRAYER:
O God, who gladden us each year by the feast of Saint Avertanus, graciously grant that, as we rejoice in his merits, we may be inspired by his example. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
