Saints celebrated on the 2nd of September
WELCOME!
BLESSED MARIA VELOTTI, VIRGIN AND FOUNDRESS
Blessed Maria Luigia Velotti, born on November 16, 1826, was orphaned as a toddler, taken in by a maiden aunt who ultimately became abusive, and later adopted by a childless neighbours' couple who encouraged her in her pursuit of holiness. As an adult, she took vows as a Third Order Franciscan, taking the religious name Maria Luigia del Santissimo Sacramento.
Blessed Maria had many mystical experiences, as well as great suffering at the hand of demons. Though she was nearly illiterate, Blessed Maria possessed great wisdom. After spending several years in prayer and penance, at the age of nearly 50, in 1877, she founded the new religious family of the Franciscan Sisters Adorers of the Holy Cross for the education of girls and the promotion of women.
Blessed Maria lived a life filled with humility, simplicity, and love for God. Despite experiencing a long and debilitating illness, she never wavered in her faith or her commitment to her religious vocation. She embraced her suffering as a means of uniting herself with the sufferings of Christ.
On September 3, 1886, at 9 am, Blessed Maria passed away at the Franciscan Sisters Adorers of the Holy Cross in Casoria, Naples, after enduring her illness with great patience and resignation. Blessed Maria was laid to rest in the local cemetery in Casoria; her remains were re-interred in a chapel at the mother-house of the Franciscan Sisters Adorers of the Holy Cross on December 26, 1926.
