Saints celebrated on the 1st of May
SAINT BRIEUC, BISHOP
Saint Brieuc (Briocus), memorial: May 1, was a (regional) bishop in Brittany, of whom it is not entirely certain when he lived. Butler* asserts that he was a student of Saint Germanus of Auxerre. According to our research, Brieuc was either a disciple of this saint in the 5th century, or a disciple of another Saint Germanus in Ireland in the 6th century.
During the Norman invasions, his mortal remains were taken from the monastery that bears his name (Briocum) to the Abbey of Saint Sergius in Angers. In 1210, a substantial part of the relics were returned to the Church of Saint Brieuc, which had been elevated to a Cathedral in A.D. 844.
