SAINT MARY OF CORDOBA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR
Saint Mary's father confessed his Christian faith in Spain at the time when Moslems controlled the country, and he succeeded in bringing up his daughter Mary as a Christian.
In order to be able to live their faith quietly and in peace, they moved away from their hometown of
Cordoba (Cordova) and came to Froniano. There, for his education, he gave his son Valabonsus (Wallabonsus) to a priest called Salvador, who was also the head of the nearby monastery of St Felix. He brought his daughter, Mary, to Cuteclara for the same purpose, under the leadership of a woman named Artemia, whose two sons, Adolf (Adulphus) and John (Johannes) had been martyred for their Christian faith. Valabonsus died as a martyr in Cordova in 851. Peter, the monk Sabinianus, Wistremundus of Ecija, Habentius and Jeremias - the latter two from Cordova (June 7) - were executed alongside him for being Christians. Five months later, Saint Mary and Saint Flora suffered the same fate. Their bodies were given to the dogs to eat, and when the animals did not touch them, they were thrown into the river. A part of their relics are venerated in the church of St Asciclus. The Elenchus* lists Mary with the surname Gonsalva. (Florez, Esp. pp. IX. 424-432 et XII. 71-75.)
