BLESSED DALMATIUS MONER, RELIGIOUS
Blessed Dalmatius Monerius [Dalmatius Moner], a Dominican monk from Girona (Gerunda) in Spain, was born to wealthy and noble parents in Saint Columba de Farnes, Catalonia, around the year 1291 and raised in all virtue and piety. After completing his studies in Girona and Montpellier (Mons-Pessulanus) in France, he resolved to enter the Dominican Order. Upon his return from France, at the age of 23, he fulfilled this resolve by donning the habit of Saint Dominic in Girona.
Because of his learning and knowledge, he was often offered good positions and other corresponding offices; however, he could not be persuaded to accept them. Blessed Dalmatius instead preferred to serve God in prayer and penance in a secluded corner of the monastery until his death.
He died at the age of 50 on September 24, 1341, and in 1721 his veneration, dating back to time immemorial, was confirmed by Pope Innocent XIII. In 1726, Pope Benedict XIII permitted the clergy of the Diocese of Girona and the entire Order of Preachers to celebrate his feast day on September 24, which is why his name is listed in the Roman Martyrology* for this order on that day. He is the patron saint against toothache, which apparently stems from the fact that after his death, many miracles and quick relief from such pains occurred through touching one of his teeth, which is kept in the sacristy of the order's church.
