PRAYER:
Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Saint Peter may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

In 1838, the French missionary priest (Saint) Pierre Dumoulin-Borie was arrested during the anti-Catholic persecution in Vietnam under the emperor Minh Mang.
As pagan soldiers encircled the priest, a young man named Peter Tu Khac Nguyen came to ask for his blessing.
The youth then openly professed his Catholic faith to the soldiers and said he wanted to join the missionary in his sufferings.
Father Dumoulin-Borie feared that Peter would not have the strength to persevere, but the young man assured him, “With the grace of God I hope to be constant and follow you even unto death.”
Moved to tears by this reply, the priest gave Peter a piece of his hat and told him, “Take this and preserve it as a testament to your word.”
After being imprisoned with Father Dumoulin-Borie, Peter was beaten and scourged. When ordered by his persecutors to trample upon a cross, Peter replied that he could never trample upon the holy wood by which he had been saved from eternal death and which he would love and venerate to the end of his life.
On July 10, 1840, nineteen months after Father Dumoulin-Borie’s martyrdom, Peter was put to death by strangulation.
“Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.”
