SAINT INNOCENS, BISHOP OF LE MANS

Meaning of the name. The name Innocens, as well as the subsequent names Innocentia, Innocentius, etc. - derives from the Latin innocens, meaning innocent.

This holy bishop, Innocens (Innocentius), was baptized, well educated, and ordained a priest by Saint Victorius (or Victurius), Bishop of Le Mans (September 1). Saint Victorius was succeeded by Saint Principius (September 16), and following him, Saint Innocens ascended the episcopal see of Le Mans, occupying it for many years. As the Bollandist* Stilting (Aug. V. 143, no. 16) considers probable, Innocens signed the acts of the Second Council of Orléans in 533, subsequently attended the Fourth Council of Orléans in 541, and died - according to Papebroch* - in 542. It is stated in a later Bollandist* account (Sept. I. 223, no. 17), that he had the bodies of his holy predecessors Victurus (Victor) and Victurius (Victorius) interred in the Church of the Holy Apostles situated above the Sarthe River; he himself was also buried there. Incidentally, the chronology and history of the bishops of Le Mans remain, as Stilting* (Aug. V. 144, no. 22) observes, very obscure and difficult to determine.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.  He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished.
