Saints celebrated on the 20th of May
BLESSED TOMAS VALERA GONZALEZ, MARTYR
Tomas, of pious parents, had a particular devotion to the Eucharist and to Our Lady. He was a teenager when the Spanish Civil War raged in his homeland, leading to the systematic and brutal persecution of faithful Catholics by the new government.
Tomas joined Catholic Action to testify to his faith. It so happened that militiamen tried to set the church on fire, but Tomas stopped them, yelling: "None of you enters the church because I'll stay right here, blocking your path!" For his courage he was arrested on August 26, 1936. He suffered two years imprisonment in El Ingenio de Almería, helping and consoling fellow prisoners. In 1938, at the age of 19, he was taken to Turón and shot on May 20. His last words were, "Long live Christ the King!"
