SAINT ADELA, ABBESS
Saint Adela (Adula, Adulla) was the sister of Saint Irmene and daughter of King Dagobert II in France. She married a respected nobleman, named Alberich, and bore him a son, who later became the father of the holy Abbot Gregory in Utrecht.
SHE TOOK THE VEIL
After the death of her husband, Adela devoted herself entirely to the exercises of godliness and took the veil in the convent she founded in Palatinate (Palatiolum), not far from Trier.
SHE WAS ABBESS OF THE COMMUNITY
From the life of her grandson, Saint Gregory, we know that in 722 she headed the community there as abbess. How long she lived after this is not known; but it is believed that she died around the year 734. Her will, drawn up on April 1, 732, is still preserved. See also: Athela, Abbess
