Saints celebrated on the 23rd of July
SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN, WIDOW (BIRGITTA BIRGERSDOTTER)
Saint Bridget was born in Sweden in 1303. She married and gave birth to eight children for whom she was a devoted mother. After her husband’s death she continued to live in the world but devoted herself to the ascetic life as a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis. She then founded a religious order and, journeying to Rome for the sake of penance, became a model of great virtue to all. She also wrote many works in which she related her mystical experiences. Saint Bridget died in Rome in 1373.
PRAYER:
O God, who guided Saint Bridget of Sweden
along different paths of life
and wondrously taught her the wisdom of the Cross
as she contemplated the Passion of your Son,
grant us, we pray,
that, walking worthily in our vocation,
we may seek you in all things.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
[Saint Bridget of Sweden was listed in the earlier Roman Calendar for celebration on October 7, the day of her canonisation by Pope Boniface IX in 1391.]
