JAKOBUS WIRTH, FOUNDER
Jakobus (James) was born in Niederbreitbach, Kingdom of Prussia (in today's Germany), on October 15, 1830. He trained as a shoemaker. He joined the Third Order of St Francis, whose members were active in addressing the social and religious needs of the region.
THE FRANCISCAN BROTHERS OF THE HOLY CROSS
In 1862, with the approval of the Bishop of Trier, he formed the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross. The motherhouse of the new congregation, St Joseph Monastery, was built in the town of Hausen in 1866. While caring for smallpox patients, Brother Jakobus himself became infected and died on March 28, 1871.
