Saints celebrated on the 10th of May
SERVANT OF GOD ALFRED KI-ZERBO, CATECHIST
Today is the death anniversary of the Servant of God Alfred Simon Diban Ki-Zerbo, who was born in 1875. According to Monseigneur Zéphirin Toe he was the "First Christian of Upper Volta" (today's Burkina Faso).
"APOSTLE ALFRED KI-ZERBO"
A married layman, Servant of God Alfred Ki-Zerbo became the leader of 500.000 Christians in North-West Africa. He made a pilgrimage to Rome, where he met St Paul VI, who allowed him to sit on the papal throne.
THE POPE'S BLESSING
In 1980, the centenary catechist was hospitalised. Pope John Paul II, on a pastoral trip to Africa, sent him his blessing.
HE DIED WHILE LISTENING TO HOLY MASS ON THE RADIO
From his hospital bed, Alfred Ki-Zerbo listened on the radio to the Mass celebrated in Ouagadougou on May 10, 1980 by the sovereign pontiff. He surrendered his soul to God at the very moment when the successor of Saint Peter pronounces the final blessing.
HE LIVED UNDER ALL THE POPES OF THE 20th CENTURY
Having been baptised under Leo XIII and having died under John Paul II, Alfred Diban Ki-Zerbo lived under the reigns of all the popes of the 20th century.
