LUCAS GLABSPERGER, PRIEST AND RELIGIOUS
Lucas Glabsperger was a priest of the Reformed Franciscan Order of the Bavarian province of Landshut. At first he had been a Jesuit. A famous preacher for many years, he died on November 23, 1672 at the convent of King Oswald in Dingolfing.
He was the inventor of the notes in honour of the Immaculate Conception, which were often used with energumens; this is why these slips were also called "Lucas slips". They were printed in his time with the permission of the superiors; after his death they may well have been misused, which is why they were eventually forbidden by the Catholic authorities. According to Menzel* the notes had prayers to St Luke the Evangelist written on them, which were placed on terminally ill patients who had been given up by the doctor. (J.M.R.)
